Self-care Tips For A New Mom

When you become a parent, the whole gravity of your existence shifts towards the little one without you even realising. Suddenly, diapers, milk bottles, soothers, hand sanitizers, and wet wipes take the top slot in your shopping list, pushing down that bag on your wish list and gym fee down further. Motherhood brings with itself a host of new responsibilities. You not only start functioning on dangerously low levels of sleep, but also develop a habit of putting yourself last, no matter the occasion. Which is why when you finally get a chance to look at the mirror, you almost don’t recognise yourself. From dishevelled hair, pulled together in a messy bun to dark circles which have become a permanent resident on your face--you are simply not you. This is why as a new mama, it is important to take care of yourself first before you try to make the world perfect for your baby.
Mothers take note. Here are three ways you can inculcate self-care in your day-to-day routine.

Remember, self-care is not selfish, it is simply essential.

1. Ask for help whenever needed

Taking care of the tiny human you have just given birth to can be really overwhelming. You don’t have to do everything alone and should ask for help. From close friends to extended family members, everybody will be more than happy to do their bit to give you some much-needed alone time. From babysitting to grabbing a few things from your grocery list, learn to ask and accept help whenever needed.

2. Reclaim your sleep Mothers

while we understand that you may feel tempted to catch up with the next season of your favourite Netflix series as the little one dozes off, we suggest sleeping when your baby is sleeping. Yes, put that phone away and relax. However, if sleep seems to evade you, put on some relaxing music or read a book. Do whatever it takes to make you feel at peace and relaxed. 3. Do not stop exercising Whatever you do, do not stop exercising. New mothers should indulge in at least 30 minutes to an hour of physical activity every day to stay healthy and sane. It can be anything from going for a walk around the block, dancing on your favourite tunes at home to even going shopping with girls--just pick one activity and stick to it.
